Myths About Court Appointed Attorneys

There are several myths about Court Appointed Attorneys and Public Defenders that include:

  • They are not real attorneys
  • They are in bed with the prosecutor
  • They work for the court and not the client

These are only myths and not reality.

All Court Appointed Attorneys are real attorneys.  They are not in bed with the prosecutor.  Attorneys who practice in their local areas will become familiar with the local prosecutors and other professionals they interact with on a daily basis.  This is ok and should not be construed to mean an attorney would not provide his client with the best defense possible.

Court Appointed Attorneys do not work for the court they work for the defendant.

We have worked on several criminal cases with Court Appointed Attorneys and find these attorneys:

  • Are aggressive and care about providing the best defense possible
  • Are open to new defense theories
  • Have access to resources such as private investigators, litigation support, forensic accountants, document examiners and many more
  • Will put together a defense team and work closely with each member of the defense team to aggressively defend their client
  • Are aggressive in preserving their clients appeal rights
